The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) is a public research body operating under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE). It is also responsible for safeguarding the mineralogical collections of the Italian Geological Survey. In 2006, ISPRA launched the Re.Mi. Project, establishing the Italian Network of Mining Parks and Museums to identify and monitor disused mining sites across Italy and promote their preservation, restoration and public accessibility. The network includes a wide variety of sites and initiatives, such as mining museums, science and technology museums, ecomuseums, mining parks, thematic trails and mining treks. It also encompasses sites that combine industrial heritage with activities beyond traditional museum functions, including recreation, crafts and industrial production. As part of the Re.Mi. Project, ISPRA organises the annual National Mining Day (Giornata Nazionale delle Miniere – G.N.M.), in collaboration with AIPAI, ANIM, ASSORISORSE, G&T and MASE, and with the support of leading organisations such as the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), the National Council of Geologists (CNG), EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) and AMODO, the Alliance for Sustainable Mobility. The initiative brings together numerous sites and organisations throughout Italy, including the Sardinia Geological, Mining, Historical and Environmental Park and, in particular, Miniera Montevecchio. Each year, Montevecchio marks the occasion with a varied programme of conferences, guided tours, live music and food and wine experiences, celebrating the region’s rich mining heritage and its cultural significance.
